HOW DID IT ALL START?
The ORIUNITE project began with a vision to use orienteering as a tool to bridge the longstanding divide between Turkish and Greek Cypriots in Nicosia, a city split by decades of conflict. Inspired by the idea of creating a shared orienteering map that spans both sides of the divided capital, the project symbolized the possibility of unity and reconciliation.
Mapping activities started with contributions from both communities, but challenges arose, including the sensitive nature of mapping in the north and the logistical complexities of crossing the buffer zone. Despite initial progress, the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily halted efforts.
The determination to complete the unified map persisted, driven by the belief that shared orienteering events could foster dialogue, understanding, and cooperation. This project seeks to not only bring together divided communities but also serve as a model for other regions facing similar conflicts, showcasing the power of sports to transcend barriers and promote peace.
EXPANDING HORIZONS
Building on the example in Nicosia, ORIUNITE will extend its efforts to other historically divided locations, including Mostar and Sarajevo (Bosnia Herzegovina), Gorizia and Nova Gorica (Italy/Slovenia), Őrség (Hungary/Austria/Slovenia), Dragonja (Croatia/Slovenia), and Berlin (Germany). These sites, emblematic of political and social conflicts, will host orienteering events designed to foster unity and reconciliation.
Guided by the Theory of Change framework, the project focuses on three levels of transformation:
- Interpersonal Change: Building meaningful connections between individuals from divided groups.
- Community Change: Empowering youth as peace advocates to influence systemic progress.
- Global Change: Creating a network of youth leaders to drive a global movement for peace.
ORIUNITE envisions lasting impacts, inspiring similar initiatives worldwide and showcasing the enduring potential of sports to heal and unite fractured societies.
H ORIENTEERING: NAVIGATING TOWARD UNITY AND UNDERSTANDING
Orienteering stands out as a powerful sport for peacebuilding, offering a unique combination of physical challenge, teamwork, and strategic thinking. Its emphasis on navigation through diverse terrains creates opportunities for participants from divided communities to work together, fostering collaboration, dialogue, and mutual respect.
Key aspects of orienteering’s role in reconciliation include:
- Teamwork and Problem-Solving: Mixed teams navigate courses together, promoting understanding and trust across divides.
- Symbolic Journey: The sport mirrors the process of overcoming obstacles toward reconciliation, offering profound shared experiences.
- Inclusive Participation: Open to individuals of all ages and backgrounds, orienteering promotes social cohesion and breaks down barriers.
- Exploration of Shared Heritage: Events in historically divided regions, such as Nicosia, allow participants to connect with their collective history.
- Educational Impact: Orienteering raises awareness about the history and challenges of divided communities, enriching participants’ understanding.
By blending adventure, education, and interaction, orienteering embodies the potential of sports to unite people and pave the way for peacebuilding in conflict-affected areas.
